A Direct Debit Indemnity Claim is the method by which a payer can reclaim their Direct Debit payment back under the Direct Debit Guarantee. The bank is required to offer an immediate refund in the event that a Direct Debit has been taken in error or without authority. This refund is then claimed back from the Service User’s (payee's) bank account.

The Service User can challenge or raise a counter-claim within 14 working days if they can provide evidence that the Direct Debit was legitimately taken within the framework of the Bacs guide and rules.

To comply with Bacs, it is now possible to download the following Direct Debit Indemnity Claim report types within Autopay Online Plus:

  • DDIC Ad hoc challenge and response audit trail report for Service Users (1225) - The report includes any linked DDICs that were part of the challenge/response, including details of any re-challenges and responses. This report gives details of a challenged Direct Debit Indemnity Claim (including any linked items) and lists any actions taken, for example if the challenge was accepted, rejected or was relodged and accepted or rejected.

  • DDIC Service User In Progress Challenge and Response Report (1226) - This report gives details of DDICs raised against a Service User which have been challenged and include the status of the challenge. The date range is up to 12 working days, to reflect when a DDIC can be challenged, based on the selection criteria provided by the requestor on PSW (Bacs Payment Services website).

  • DDIC service User In Progress Reason Code 7 Requests Report (1227) - This report gives details of DDICs raised by a Service User using the Bacs PSW (Bacs Payment Services website). Such requests must use a DDIC reason code 7, indicating that the request is from the Service User. The date range is the past N number of configured working days in which the PSP should respond to request.
